Choose your paint before you choose your subject
Acrylic dries fast, covers everything and forgives mistakes — paint straight over them. Gouache dries matte and flat, which is why illustrators love it. Oil pastels are drawing and painting at once: blend them with a finger, scratch back through the layers.
The surface matters as much as the paint. Stretched canvas gives a springy, generous feel; canvas panels are rigid, cheap and perfect for practice — buy them in a mix and stop treating each one as precious.

Let the paint do the work
Acrylic pouring mixes paint with a fluid medium and lets gravity finish the composition. Tilt the canvas, watch the cells open, stop while it is still alive.
It is the most forgiving technique we sell — there is no wrong mark, only a different tilt — which makes it a favourite for people who insist they cannot draw.

Acrylic or gouache for a beginner?
Acrylic. It covers mistakes, dries in minutes and works on canvas, wood, paper and clay. Move to gouache when you want a flat, matte illustration look.
Do I need to prime a canvas?
Our stretched canvases and panels arrive pre-primed. Paint straight onto them.
How do I clean brushes?
Rinse acrylic and gouache brushes in water immediately — acrylic that dries in the bristles is permanent. Reshape the tip and dry them lying flat.
